What was the "Peace of Augsburg"? Who did it affect?
The “Peace of Augsburg” was the name given to the agreement signed in the year 1555 by Fernando of Austria, brother of the emperor Carlos V, with the German princes. In this document it was recognized the religious freedom of the German Protestant princes.
The time to come to this agreement was long due to the religious problems that appeared , especially when Carlos V was proclaimed an emperor in the year 1519, and he tried to restore in the governed territories the catholic faith. However, in Germany he always found people who opposed to him, like the German princes, followers of the “Protestantism”. After long complications, the signature of the " Peace of Augsburg " ended on September 25th, 1555, obtaining the religious concord between the Catholics and the Protestants, and marking the end of Carlos V’s reign.
